Crais Changed?

Description:

At the end of "Mind the Baby", Crais tells Scorpius that Crichton is dead. Scorpius immediately decides that Crais is deceiving him, trying to perpetrate some small act of revenge for the ruin of his career.

Was Crais really trying to be helpful? Did he change from the hateful PK captain we all know and loathe into someone groping his way into something approaching benevolence?

New info: Crais made a promise to Crichton at the end of "Infinite Possibilities: Icarus Abides" to take care of the others. Crichton appeared to trust Crais at this point, despite some of the things that have happened over the past few episodes.

Parent effect
Crais is now effectively a parent. In reaching out to bond with Talyn, he finally broke through his PK conditioning and took the first step toward empathy.
Hunted too
Crais has learned to the fullest extent what it is like to be hunted and despised.
Comfy chair effect
Crais was forced to relive his entire past in the Aurora Chair when Aeryn turned it on and left it on "The Hidden Memory". That has to change a person.
He let John go
Crais had an opportunity to kill John. Talyn was apparently willing. Instead, he let John go. This is evidence of at least partially kindly intent.
Object of wrath changed
Even if Crais has not undergone a fundamental shift in his personality, the object of his wrath has changed. He's more angry at Scorpius than the crew of Moya now.
Family
Unlike Aeryn, Crais has memories of a family and emotional ties other than being a PK. He has less far to go.
Helping Hand
Crais actually has helped out a little, here and there, when the crew really needed him.
Leopards and spots
Leopards don't change their spots, and PK captains don't stop being vengeful and vindictive.
Bad impression on Talyn
Crais didn't want to make a bad impression on Talyn by killing a defenseless man. It if wasn't for Talyn, Crais would've killed John in a blink. The fact that he let John go is not evidence of kindly intent.
Scorpius is insightful
Ol' Scorpy has been shown to be a remarkably good judge of another's actions. He misses some of the details, but is usually right overall.
Self Interest
Crais acted out of self interest. He made the deal with Aeryn to keep Talyn. He didn't kill Crichton when he had the chance because Crichton had a gun at his head. He's just protecting himself.
Sun Senior
You didn't really think that Crais shot Mama Sun, did you?
